Porsche 911 (996.1)

1999–2001·Series 996.1

The Porsche 911 (996.1) is the first phase of the fifth-generation 911, produced for model years 1999 through 2001, replacing the air-cooled 993. It was assembled in Stuttgart (Zuffenhausen), Germany, on an all-new chassis platform, the first entirely new 911 structure since the original car. From the nose through the B-pillar, this generation shared its front-end structure, headlights, and interior dashboard and console design with the contemporary Boxster. Porsche adopted this shared design as a deliberate cost strategy, needing a lower-priced volume model alongside the 911 to stay financially viable, with combined sales targets for both cars driving the decision.
