1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SL
102,000 mi · manual · Las Vegas, NV
The Mercedes-Benz SL (R129) is the fourth-generation SL, the two-seat convertible that succeeded the R107 in 1989. It grew from a project begun in the mid-1970s, and Johann Tomforde refined its clean wedge profile under chief designer Bruno Sacco, who called it the most perfect car of his career. Sharp styling and a dense load of new technology brought the Mercedes roadster up to date. GarageScout places the R129 in the period when Mercedes-Benz engineered to a standard with little regard for cost, and its safety technology and engines show that thoroughness in every system. In GarageScout's view, the R129 defines the SL as a high-technology grand tourer, one that combines strong performance with the quiet refinement of a car built for long distances.
