Built at Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and Uusikaupunki from model years 2006 through 2012, the 987 Cayman introduced a fixed-roof coupe body to Porsche’s mid-engine platform. Adding a fixed steel roof doubled torsional rigidity to 23,200 lb-ft per degree compared to the Boxster. The 987.1 phase (2006 through 2008) used port-injected M97 flat-sixes, while the 987.2 phase (2009 through 2012) introduced clean-sheet 9A1 direct-injection engines without intermediate shafts and seven-speed PDK transaxles. The 1,421-unit Cayman R highlights the generation.
