1963 Mercedes-Benz 300SL
London, United Kingdom
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL W198 stands as the pinnacle postwar sports car, translating Carrera Panamericana and Le Mans endurance racing dominance into an incomparable road-going grand tourer. Conceived through the advocacy of American importer Max Hoffman, the 300 SL debuted at the February 1954 New York International Auto Show. Its lightweight steel tubular spaceframe chassis mandated iconic upward-pivoting gullwing doors on the coupe, creating an indelible automotive silhouette. Engineering triumphs defined every corner, headlined by the direct mechanical fuel injection system on its 3.0-liter dry-sump inline-six. Reaching speeds of 163 mph, the 300 SL reigned as the fastest production automobile in existence. In 1957, the open-top roadster succeeded the coupe, introducing a revised low-pivot swing axle and conventional passenger doors for refined long-distance touring prowess.
