BMW M3 (E36)

1992–1999·Series E36

The BMW M3 (E36) is the second-generation high-performance sports car manufactured by BMW M GmbH in Regensburg, Germany from 1992 through 1999 across 71,242 examples worldwide. Powered by a naturally aspirated 24-valve DOHC inline-six engine (the 3.0-liter S50B30US and 3.2-liter S52B32US in North America, and the individual-throttle-body S50B30 and S50B32 in Europe), the E36 M3 expanded beyond its coupe origins to offer dedicated four-door sedan and convertible body styles. Engineered with 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution, multi-link Z-axle rear suspension, and a standard mechanical limited-slip differential, it established the commercial foundation for modern BMW M, crowned by the 126-unit 1995 M3 Lightweight homologation special.
