GarageScout Take

Over $20,000 in documented work through E39source covers the E39 M5’s major chassis, driveline, VANOS, and oil-system service, with receipts from the prior owner as well. Carbon Black Metallic is uncommon among observed examples, while 180,000 miles sits near the high end for the generation. Rock chips and interior wear accompany a non-tilting sunroof, failed front parking sensor, minor oil seepage, exhaust creak, and occasional BlueBus call dropouts.

Strengths

  • Long California ownership history with documentation from previous owners and over $20,000 in current-owner service.
  • Extensive chassis and driveline work includes new control arms, struts, sway bar links, driveshaft refresh, differential seals, bushings, and fluid.
  • VANOS seals and O-rings, valve cover gaskets, oil pump O-rings, belts, pulleys, and primary O2 sensors were replaced.
  • Factory Shadowline-trimmed E39 M5 with 18-inch Style 65 wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, and Euro xenon headlights.

Watch For

  • Rock chips, a small dent below the right taillight, minor scratches, and curb marks on the right front wheel are noted.
  • The front center parking distance control sensor requires replacement, and the sunroof opens but does not tilt because of a broken linkage.
  • Minor seat-bolster and leather wear, two small nicks in the passenger-door titanium trim, and a stable windshield crack are present.
  • Minor rear main seal seepage and light valve-cover-gasket sweating are reported, along with a faint exhaust creak and occasional BlueBus audio dropouts.
