GarageScout Take

Long-term ownership has carried this Z through a substantial mechanical rework, including the 2023 280ZX five-speed conversion and the 2021 clutch, flywheel, and hydraulic work. The replacement panels and repeat repainting, bubbles in the right front fender and a door, startup smoke, and transmission seepage define the compromises.

Strengths

  • Long-term current ownership since 1991, following two prior California owners.
  • Modified 2.8-liter engine with a circa-2006 overhaul and supporting induction, ignition, exhaust, and cooling work.
  • Five-speed conversion from a 1979 280ZX, with a replacement clutch, hydraulics, and lightened flywheel fitted in 2021.
  • Service records, handwritten notes, manuals, spare parts, and a Wisconsin title are included.

Watch For

  • Repainted in 1992 and again in 2002; the rear hatch, left fender, left door, portions of the doglegs, and hood were replaced and painted.
  • Bubbles are present on the lower right front fender and one door.
  • The five-digit odometer has rolled over, and the Wisconsin title lists an “Exempt” odometer status.
  • Exhaust smoke is visible during startup until the engine warms, and oil seepage is present from the front of the transmission.
