GarageScout Take

The first left-hand-drive R-Type Continental, BC8LA was completed in May 1952 and fitted with H.J. 5473. It retains its matching-numbers 4.5-litre engine and original Mulliner body tag. George Chilberg owned it for over five decades, drove it in Bentley Drivers Club events, and carried out a comprehensive restoration in the early 1990s that included an engine rebuild, mechanical overhaul, and body refinishing.

Strengths

  • First left-hand-drive example
  • Mulliner fastback body with original body tag
  • Matching-numbers engine
  • Comprehensive early-1990s restoration
  • Long-term single-owner history

Watch For

  • Restored in the early 1990s, including refinished bodywork
  • Current tan over brown color scheme differs from the factory-recorded Silver Blue and Blue combination
  • Mechanical work may have been carried out by Jim Rickman, with payments exceeding $12,700 referenced in the records
